How to apply wood veneer at home: a step-by-step guide
You don't need a press to veneer at home. From surface preparation to cutting, gluing and finishing, step by step.
Short answer: Cut the veneer slightly oversize, spread a thin, even coat of PVA glue on a clean, flat substrate, lay the veneer and roll it from the centre outwards, then leave it under weight for several hours. Trim, sand and oil once dry.
What you need
- Natural wood veneer sheets
- D3 PVA veneer glue
- A veneer knife or sharp craft knife and a metal ruler
- A veneer roller
- A flat board and weights
- 180–400 grit sandpaper and natural wood oil
1. Prepare the surface
The substrate must be flat, clean, dust-free and grease-free. MDF is ideal.
2. Cut the veneer
Leave 5–10 mm extra on every side. Cut along the grain with several light passes rather than one hard stroke. If the veneer is wavy, mist it lightly and flatten it overnight between two boards under weight.
3. Apply the glue
Spread glue on the substrate only, in a thin, even coat. Too much glue can bleed through the veneer and leave spots that won't take oil.
4. Lay and roll
Position the veneer and roll it from the centre to the edges to push out the air.
5. Press and cure
Cover with non-stick paper, a flat board and weights. Leave for at least 3–4 hours, ideally overnight.
6. Trim and finish
Trim the overhang with a knife along the edge, ease the edges with a sanding block, sand with the grain up to 320–400 grit and apply oil.
Common mistakes
- Too much glue: causes bleed-through.
- Not enough pressure: causes bubbles.
- Veneering one side only: thin panels can warp. Add a balancing veneer on the back — our veneered MDF already has one.
